On Sunday, September 24, 2017, Zihro Plastic hosted the first official Beach Clean Up Event. Those who wanted to perform underwater clean up met up with Joao at Dive Zihua to select their gear. The other participants arrived on the main pier with Jennifer and Miriam and we all came together to meet and discuss the plan for the day.
People purchased t-shirts, bags and we got to have some wonderful tamales from La Cooperativa Eco Vegana to get us on our way.
Joao and Miriam took 14 divers and beach crew out on the boat to Contramar beach, just outside of Zihua bay. Jennifer took a beach crew of 7 people to Playa Principal, beginning at the pier.
Everyone worked hard to fill their bags on the beaches and under the water!
We were lucky to be visited by reporters during our event and received articles in two different local papers.
We gathered together at the end to combine our collections and have a group photo and some delicious snacks donated by La Tienda Organica . A number of us went on to sort the trash and take an accounting of what had been collected.
It was a tiring morning, but we not only collected 20 bags of trash, we also learned quite a bit to help improve things for our next event.
With the help of an App, we did our best to count our collected items.

We were lucky to have Erick Rams along as well, a local film maker who put together this nice video about our day:
