Bienvenido a Irene! Nuevo Voluntario en Zihro Plastic

We are so pleased to have an experienced plastic-free expert on board!  Meet Irene Woermke:

Are you someone who cares about the environment? If you answered yes, you probably worry about endangered species, you probably believe that climate change is real (and it is), and certainly you are aware that plastic pollution is getting out of hand. In my short 35 years on earth, I have been fortunate to live in 4 countries, travel to 17 and visit 1000s of cities. What I have come to learn is that one can find beauty anywhere on earth, and now you can also find plastic.

Here in Zihuantanejo, we live in one of the most beautiful and magical places on planet earth. However, at the same time our roads, oceans and beaches are littered with garbage. It is a problem that continues to grow. I ride my bicycle in the mornings around Zihua, I snorkel in the beautiful clear waters of Manzanillo and I walk La Ropa beach for sunset. There is plastic EVERYWHERE. The issue is that once you notice it, you cannot stop, and I think we might have a plastic problem. So here I am – the newest member of Zihro Plastic, trying to do my part to find a solution.

I am excited to bring to the organization my experience from Canada where I recently completed my Master of Business and worked with Plastic Free YYC, a grassroots organization focused on reducing single use plastic. Currently I am working on our beach and ocean clean-ups and our local plastic recycling machine project. ¡Estamos muy contentos de contar con un experto en viviendo sin plásticos a bordo! Conoce a Irene Woermke:

¿Eres de las personas que se preocupan por el medio ambiente?

Si su respuesta es afirmativa, probablemente te preocupas por las especies en peligro de extinción, probablemente creas que el cambio climático es real (y lo es), y ciertamente eres consciente de que la contaminación plástica se nos está yendo de las manos.

En mis cortos 35 años en la tierra, he tenido la suerte de vivir en cuatro países, viajar a diecisiete y visitar miles de ciudades. Lo que me ha hecho apeciar la belleza en cualquier lugar de la tierra, pero también la desolación por ver plástico en todos los rincones.

Aquí en Zihuantanejo vivimos en uno de los lugares más bellos y mágicos del planeta tierra. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo nuestros caminos, océanos y playas están llenos de basura.

Andar en bicicleta por las mañanas en Zihua, bucear en las hermosas aguas claras de Manzanillo y camino por la playa de La Ropa al atardecer es maravilloso pero mirar el plástico por todas partes es hasta deprimente.

 

Así que aquí estoy como miembro voluntario en Zihro Plastic, para involucrarme en las propuestas y acciones para dar solución.

Estoy emocionada por compartir mi experiencia adquirida en Canadá, donde recientemente completé mi maestría en negocios la cual puse en práctica con Plastic Free YYC, una organización de base centrada en la reducción del plástico de un solo uso. Actualmente estoy trabajando en nuestra limpieza de playas y océanos y en nuestro proyecto local de máquinas de reciclaje de plástico.

New Project- Local Plastic Recycling Efforts

Zihro Plastic is supporting a new local project and could use some help from someone who is skilled in building things and has mechanical inclinations.

We are working with a group of students at the Instituto Lizardi (a private school here in town). These 4 students are interested in building a plastic recycling machine.  There are plans for developing these machines from an organization called Precious Plastic.  Based in the Netherlands, this organization is sharing detailed plans and information so people all over the world in small towns/anywhere, can build these machines and begin recycling plastic and creating products from the plastic, which they can use/sell.  The items being made can also be recycled again and again in these machines.

While the students have detailed plans and online tutorials, they would benefit greatly by having a mentor to help them through the building process of these machines. Having some basic tools you could share would be helpful as well.  (Also, the students speak excellent English!)

Zihro Plastic is prepared to cover the bulk of the expense for all the building materials, but donated funds would be much appreciated as well.  The project will cost under $10,000 pesos.

Once the machines are built, they will need to be housed someplace along with stored collected plastics (much of which will come from beach clean ups we are beginning to schedule starting in Dec. ) where students can work to create the recycled products.  The new products can be sold in various local tiendas and also we hope at Eco Tianguis.

Zihro Plastic está apoyando un nuevo proyecto y podría necesitar ayuda de alguien con habilidades para construir cosas / inclinaciones mecánicas.

Estamos trabajando con un grupo de estudiantes en el Instituto Lizardi (una escuela privada aquí en la ciudad). Estos 4 estudiantes están interesados ​​en construir una máquina de reciclaje de plástico. Hay planes para desarrollar estas máquinas de una organización llamada “Precious Plastic”. Con sede en los Países Bajos, esta organización está compartiendo planes e información detallados para que las personas de todo el mundo en ciudades pequeñas o en cualquier lugar puedan construir estas máquinas y comenzar a reciclar plástico y crear productos a partir del plástico, que puedan usar / vender. El Camino para Vivir Libre de Plástico en Zihuatanejo

¡Una vez que te das cuenta del problema que el plástico nos causa a nosotros y a las otras criaturas con las que compartimos este planeta, comienzas a notar más y más plásticos en todas las partes de tu vida!

Cuando llegué a vivir a Zihua por vez primera, noté las bolsas de plástico en todas partes. Las que se usan innecesariamente, las que se utilizan para lo que parecen ser buenos propósitos económicos y las que simplemente flotan como basura en las playas y en el agua. Fue algo tan abrumador que quise hacer algo al respecto.

Siempre utilicé mis propias bolsas para ir de compras, pero noté que muchas personas aquí no lo hacen. Fue entonces cuando tuve la idea de hacer bolsas de compras reutilizables para la gente de aquí y tratar de crear conciencia.

  Empecé a notar cada vez más formas en las que también estaba usando plástico en mi vida y he estado trabajando en ello para eliminar y reducir mi propio consumo tanto como sea posible. No es fácil, algunas veces es frustrante y algunas veces renuncio a cosas que realmente quiero tener, porque no siento que mi deseo valga la pena del derroche de plástico que generará.

Aquí hay una lista de cosas que he comenzado a cambiar:

  1. Recuerda decir “sin popote por favor” cuando vas a comer en restaurantes. Yo intento llevar conmigo mi propio popote de acero inoxidable, o no usar popote en absoluto. Los popotes son realmente innecesarios.
  2. Siempre traigo mi propia bolsa para realizar mis compras y también me aseguro de tener bolsas más pequeñas para artículos individuales. Ya no tomo más bolsas de plástico de los rollos. También está bien mezclar cosas en una sola bolsa y después separarlas en casa.
  3. Utilizo envolturas de cera de abejas en lugar de papel de aluminio o envolturas de plástico. Estos funcionan para tapar cuencos, recipientes, envolver queso y muchos otros productos alimenticios. ¡Estos se pueden comprar ahora en Eco-Tianguis y tampoco son tan difíciles de hacer!
  4. Ya no compro bebidas, la mayoría de las cosas que me gustan vienen en recipientes de plástico. Ahora hago mis propias limonadas y también mezclo frutas en mi licuadora y las congelo en cubitos de hielo que puedo poner en agua. ¡Todas las frutas se pueden comprar en los mercados sin plástico. Cuando quiero un Tepache o algo más, traigo mi botella de agua vacía y la gente está feliz de llenarlo para mí!
  5. Compré un cepillo de dientes de bambú de La Tienda Orgánica. ¡No más cepillos de dientes plásticos desechables!
  6. Ya no compro dulces ni comida chatarra, ya no tengo papas fritas ni golosinas empaquetadas. Esto fue triste al principio, pero luego me di cuenta de que también es mucho más saludable para mí. Cuando quiero golosinas, hago los míos propios con ingredientes frescos que puedo comprar sin empaques de plástico.
  7. No uso cubiertos desechables. Tengo mi propio juego de cubiertos de madera que puedo llevar conmigo si es necesario, o me niego a comer en lugares que tienen productos desechables.
  8. Cuando quiero un coco, compro uno completo y hago que el vendedor lo corte hacia arriba, así que es fácil para mí abrirlo cuando estoy lista para comerlo. ¡Puedo llevar el coco a casa sin bolsa de plástico ni popote y verterlo en mi vaso! Si quiero ordenar un coco en un restaurante, uso mi propio popote que llevo conmigo o simplemente lo tomo directo del coco (a veces es un poco desastroso pero funciona bien).
  9. Cuando termino con algo que viene en una bolsa de plástico, lavo la bolsa y la vuelvo a utilizar para varias cosas, tantas veces como pueda.
  10. Si tengo algo en un recipiente de plástico, reutilizo el recipiente para tantas otras cosas como pueda: para guardar las sobras o incluso para organizar artículos o productos no comestibles en casa.
  11. No compraré más hilo dental de plástico ni hilo de plástico: hay alternativas de seda natural.

The Journey to Living Plastic Free in Zihuatanejo

Once you become aware of the problem plastics are causing us and the other creatures we share this planet with, you begin to notice more and more plastics everywhere in your life!

When I first live in Zihua, I noticed all the plastic bags everywhere.  Those being used unnecessarily, those being used for what seems like good economic purposes, and those just floating around as trash on the beaches and in the water.  It was so overwhelming that I wanted to do something about it.

I always used my own bags for shopping, but noticed many people here do not.  That is when I had the idea to make some shopping bags for people here and try to raise awareness.

I began to notice more and more ways I was also using plastic in my life and have been working on removing and reducing my own usage as much as possible.  It isn’t easy, and sometimes it is frustrating, and sometimes I go without things I really want to have, because I don’t feel my desire is worth the plastic waste it will create!

Here is a list of things I have begun to change:

  1. Remember to say “sin popote por favor” when eating out in restaurants. I try to carry my own stainless steel straw with me, or use no straw at all.  Straws are really unnecessary.
  2. Always bring my own shopping bag for groceries – and also making sure to have smaller bags for individual items. I no longer use plastic bags off the rolls. Also it’s OK to mix things up in one bag and store them at home.
  3. Use bees wax wraps instead of aluminum foil or plastic wrap. These work for covering bowls, containers, wrapping cheese and other food items. These can be purchased at Eco-Tianguis now and are also not that hard to make yourself!
  4. I no longer purchase drinks – most of the things I liked come in plastic containers. I now make my own limonadas, and I also blend fruits in my blender and freeze them into ice cubes that I can put in water.  All fruits can be purchased in the markets without plastic! When I want a tepache or something else, I bring my empty water bottle and people are happy to fill it for me!
  5. I bought a bamboo toothbrush from La Tienda Organica. No more throw-away plastic toothbrushes!
  6. I don’t buy candy or junk food any more – no more potato chips or packaged treats. This was sad at first, but then I realized it’s also a lot more healthy for me! When I want treats, I make my own from fresh ingredients I can buy without plastic packaging!
  7. I do not use disposable cutlery. I have my own wooden set I can bring with me if needed, or I refuse to eat in places that have disposable products.
  8. When I want a coconut, I buy a whole one and have the vendor cut the top way down so it’s easy for me to cut it open when I am ready to eat it. I can carry the coconut home with no plastic bag and straw and pour it into my glass!  If I want to order a coco at a restaurant, I use my own straw that I carry with me, or just drink from the coco (it is a little messy sometimes but it works fine!).
  9. When I do end up with something that comes in a plastic bag, I wash the bag and reuse it for a number of things, as many times as I can.
  10. If I have something in a plastic container, I will reuse the container for as many other things as I can – to store leftovers or for even organizing non-food items at home.
  11. I will not buy more plastic tooth flossers or plastic floss – there are natural silk alternatives.

¿Cuáles Son Los Planes de ZIHRO PLASTIC Ahora?

Quizás hayas notado que Zihro Plastic no ha realizado una limpieza de playa recientemente. En Zihuatanejo existe un número importante de grupos que organizan limpiezas de playa constantemente y nosotros los apoyamos mediante la difusión de los eventos que cada uno de ellos llevan a cabo. El uso de los recursos de Zihro Plastic ha cambiado su objetivo principal durante los últimos meses, debido a todo lo que estamos aprendiendo y descubriendo contantemente sobre la situación extrema de los plásticos en el mundo y lo que observamos localmente en Zihuatanejo.

Un concepto que tuvo mucho sentido y nos ayudó a enfocarnos mejor fue el siguiente: “Si el agua de la llave del fregadero está corriendo y comienza a desbordarse inundando la cocina… ¿Qué es lo primero que haces? ¡Cerrar la llave por supuesto! Después de eso podrás comenzar la limpieza del desastre. Bueno, nosotros creemos que el mejor modo de emplear nuestro tiempo y recursos es “cerrando la llave” del flujo de plástico en nuestro medio ambiente. Estamos buscando maneras de educar y ayudar a las personas a tomar nuevas y mejores decisiones/alternativas para evitar el uso de productos plásticos.

You may have noticed that Zihro Plastic has not hosted a beach clean up in some time.  There are a number of great groups in Zihua hosting clean ups – and we support them and help spread information about the events.  But the main focus and use of resources for Zihro Plastic has shifted in the past couple of months.  Given all that we are constantly learning and discovering about the dire situation of plastics in the world and what we observe locally here in Zihuatanejo.

A concept that made a lot of sense and helped us to sharpen our focus is this : If your faucet is on and overflowing your sink and flooding your kitchen…what is the first thing you should do?  Turn off the faucet, of course!  Then you can begin to clean up the mess.  Well, we believe the best use of our time and resources is to ‘turn off the faucet’ on plastic flow into our environment.  We are looking at ways we can educate people and help them make better choices and find alternative products to plastics.

Sep 24 – Underwater and Beach Clean Up Event Information

Divers should meet at Dive Zihuatanejo by 8:45 am to select and assist with equipment. All other participants meet at the main pier (Muelle Zihuatanejo) no later than 9:00 am. Depending on the crowd size, we will take everyone to Contramar or make a couple of trips if necessary. Divers will prepare to dive and beach crew will be delivered to the beach. We will provide all dive gear (and also snorkels for non divers) and bags for trash collection. Water and snacks will be available. A limited number of t-shirts, shopping bags and (we hope) sea glass bracelets will be for sale. T-shirts are $100 pesos. Shopping bags come in 3 sizes for $50, $60 or $70 pesos (set of 3 sizes for $160). Sea glass bracelets are $50. Donations toward gas, captain fees or general support are welcome!
 
Everyone will be returned to the pier by 2:00 pm.
 
We are looking forward to seeing you there for a day of good fun, good people, and good work!
